Yellow is not my color. I’ve always stayed away from it as it generally washes out my already fair skin. So why am I writing a post on how to wear a yellow dress? Well, it’s because not only is mustard a very trendy color this year, but I’m also styling it in a couple of different ways (both business and casual) that will help with pairing it with my skin tone.
If you haven’t noticed, the color mustard (which is the deeper shade of yellow) is pretty popular right now. It goes perfectly with most shades of blue, emerald green, pink, red, and even purple. I love the use of color-blocking with this color.
Which brings me to how to wear a color that is difficult to wear with your skin tone. So the first rule of thumb is to find a shade that is close to something that you could wear. For me, because my skin is so fair, finding a color that was rich and darker was important. Anything bright or pastel would have been hard for me to wear.
The second is to keep it away from your face as much as possible. I know what you’re thinking “what does that mean?” It means either wear it as a bottom, an accessory or include a jacket or cardigan that brings color back to your skin. In these two looks, I’m highlighting below, notice that I have a navy blazer and a denim jacket over the dress. I also chose a color that works best with my fair skin, even if I was to take the jacket off.
Now having a yellow dress can stand out, so you will want to find different ways to style the dress, so it doesn’t look like your wearing the same dress. In this article, I’m highlighting a look that you can wear to work and casually on the weekends.
Style 1 – Professional
Since this dress is a shirtdress and hits slightly above the knee, it creates a tailored look that is appropriate for work. The navy blazer adds a heightened element of professionalism. The shoes, which are a mix between a bootie and a sandal, make this look perfect for spring and summer. This look will make any girl boss stand out as a professional and a trendsetter.
Style 2 – Casual
Now that work is done, it’s time for some fun (lame joke, I know). That same tailored yellow shirtdress can be worn after work and on the weekends. I’ve swapped out the blazer for a slightly oversized denim jacket and some kick-ass wooden platforms. This look can work for date night, shopping (you might need to swap out those shoes), and any daytime event such as wine tasting, socializing, and brunch.
In both looks, I’m wearing one of my favorite basket bags (check out my 10 Must-Have Basket Bags post) to keep that warm weather vibe. The way I styled each of these looks also means that you can easily have a day to night look with a quick swap of the jacket and shoes.
