5 Common Style Mistakes

Style Mistake 1: You Feel Like You’re Too Old To Be Stylish
I hear this one all the time; “I’m too old to wear <insert look or piece of clothing>.” Style doesn’t have an age; it’s timeless. There are also some incredible style influencers over 50 that are still rocking their style. So remove that limiting belief from your mind.
- Iris Apfel – just turned 100
- Carla Rockmore
- Grece Ghanem
- Lyn Slater
Style Mistake 2: You’re Hiding Behind Your Clothes
I get it; we all have parts of our body that we would rather de-emphasize. However, do you want to know what hiding behind your clothes looks like? It looks like you’re hiding behind your clothes, which is not the look you should be going for. Instead of dressing to hide your body, focus on the parts of your body that you love. Dress for that, and I promise you that no one will notice the thing you want to hide if you do that.
Style Mistake 3: You’re Chasing Trends Rather Than Understanding Your Personal Style
I know trends can be fun. But if you’re constantly chasing trends, your wardrobe will have a short shelf life. It’s also possible that a particular trend may not look and feel like you, so those pieces sit in your closet unworn. Instead, try to find your personal style. This doesn’t mean that you can hop on a trend or two, but once you know your personal style. You’ll understand which trends are right for you, and you’ll be more selective. Your wardrobe will start feeling more wearable and more tailored to you.
Style Mistake 4: Your Wardrobe Isn’t Cohesive
I always say that your wardrobe should be like a synchronized dance, all moving and flowing simultaneously. However, if you have a wardrobe made up of pieces that don’t fit together, it’s going to be extremely challenging to mix and match your pieces. When you go shopping, think about how each piece you buy will fit into your existing wardrobe. Can you create at least 3 different outfits with it from your existing wardrobe?
Style Mistake 5: You’re Dressing For Someone Other Than Yourself
Believe it or not, a lot of people do not dress for themselves. They care about if other people will like their outfits or how they will be perceived on social media — even if they don’t like the outfit themselves. Yes, this is real. When you dress for someone else, it always shows with how you wear the outfit. You don’t feel confident or comfortable because it just isn’t you. Always dress for yourself, because you’ll always look and feel better. Your style is an expression of yourself and how you present yourself to the world. And if other people like it, that’s just a bonus.
In Closing
Building a wardrobe and learning your personal style takes time and patience. So you may make a mistake or two, but don’t let that stop you from continuing on this journey. Keep trying and working towards your style goals. It will become easier and easier over time.
