I do several types of workouts, but running is by far the most rewarding for me. Trust me; I know how that sounds….running….really. Yes! Honestly, I used to hate running. It hurt my body, I was too exhausted to go very far, and I couldn’t get it out of my head that it was so damn boring. Yes, I said it. Running was boring.
It wasn’t until the past couple of years that I actually started to enjoy running. Not only because it makes me feel physically good, but it also helps me mentally and emotionally. Whenever I have an issue that I need to work through, I can almost always find clarity during a run. I kid you not, running in the morning is just as good as my first cup of caffeine.
Now, I understand that not everyone is a runner. But engaging in similar activities such as jogging and walking can accomplish the same trick. It’s intended to get your body moving. Spring is right around the corner, and it’s time to get out of hibernation and get back into the best version of ourselves.
If you’re still not sold and you’re saying to yourself “I’m not ready” or “I don’t know how to start,” don’t worry. I’ve come up with a few tips that you will prepare you for your first run (or jog or walk).
Tips for Running
1. Shoes
Shoes are the single most important item you will need for running. You need to pick shoes that are specifically made for running. I prefer shoes that have a lot of support. Now please understand this, you CANNOT wear old shoes. If you having foot issues while you run, it’s your shoes.
Your running shoes have a shelf life, the more you run, the sooner you will have to replace them. I usually buy two pairs and rotate them which not only gives my shoes a chance to breathe but by switching them out each pair will hold up a little longer.
2. Sun Protection
If you’re running outside (and I highly recommend it), you will need to protect yourself from the weather conditions. I can’t state enough how essential sunscreen is when you’re running outside. Even if it’s overcast, be sure to apply sunscreen. I put sunscreen on about 30 minutes before my run, so that it’s set on my skin, working, and won’t sweat off. To protect my face when running, I will wear a hat or visor.
3. Clothes & Accessories
You don’t have to wear anything special while running. I prefer to wear breathable pieces that fit properly with moving. Nothing is more frustrating when your top rides up, or your pants slip slightly down, and you spend your entire run trying to adjust your clothes. The brands that I prefer are Nike, Adidas, and Lululemon. A good sports bra is key for your run. To ensure that you’re comfortable during your run, invest in a high-quality sports bra.
4. Playlist or Podcast
Remember how I said running was boring? Well, the perfect way to remedy that is come up with a kickass playlist or a podcast. I use both of these depending on my mood. Another way to make my run more interesting is I listen to audiobooks via Audible. Any headphones will work, but I prefer cordless.
5. Hydration & Aftercare
After your run, you will want to make sure that you drink water. You need to make sure that you stay hydrated to help your body recover. You should stretch out your muscles as well so that they don’t get tight. If you do feel muscle soreness, there are some topical creams that you can use.
Closing Statements
Hopefully, those tips are enough to inspire you to get out there and start running. However, if that’s not your workout of choice, these tips are helpful for most exercises.
