It’s time to talk about your winter coat. If you find the right winter coat, you can wear them with most of your outfit rotation. There’s a lot of things to consider when acquiring a winter coat for your wardrobe.
What to Consider When Looking for a Winter Coat
Before we get into our 5 outfits, we want to share some things to consider when purchasing a winter coat.
Your Lifestyle
Where you live will help determine the number of winter coats that you have. For example, if you live somewhere with an actual winter season, you’ll have more than someone who lives in a primarily sunny area. You’ll also want to consider the activities you do throughout the week, which will help determine the types of coats you need (dressy vs. casual).
Coat Re-wearability
The winter coat that you purchase should match the majority of your existing wardrobe. Also, you’ll want to make sure that the coat matches your personal style. Each of these factors will determine how much you wear your coat. Be sure to check out our article on Cost Per Wear here.
Fit & Quality
In choosing a winter coat, you’ll want to make sure that you invest in a quality item. Why? Because you want your jacket to last over several seasons. Ensure that the fabric wears without pilling (those little balls that appear in areas that see frequent abrasions), the seams are stitched tightly, and there are no holes.
You’ll also want to make sure that the coat fits your body. If you get an ill-fitting jacket, you’ll not want to wear it because you’ll feel uncomfortable. Check the length, if it buttons without gaping, and can you move your arms easily.
Trend or Classic
Are you choosing a winter coat based on the latest trends or a classic piece? Either is acceptable, but be aware of the lifespan of each. If you go for a trend piece, your jacket will have a lifespan of 2-5 years. And if you go for a classic piece, it could have a lifespan of 10+ years (depending on quality and amount of wear).
Need vs. Want
Is your jacket a need or a want? If it’s a want, you’ll want to assess if this is the purchase you should be making. Be sure to check the coats you already own to see if the new purchase is worth making. If you need a coat, you’ll want to review the above criteria.
