My first Audible book review is “Girl Stop Apologizing” by Rachel Hollis. I want to start giving book reviews on a few of the Audible books that I’ve been “reading,” well more like listening. Audible or audiobooks are the perfect way to “read” books while multitasking.
I rarely have the time to sit down and read a book these days. So I listen to most of my books either while driving, working out, and cleaning the house. Not only does it make those activities more enjoyable, but I’m learning and taking in new content on a more regular basis.
Now, I get that audio books take some getting used to because someone is narrating the book to you. So in my reviews, I will comment on the following: the book’s subject matter, the narration, takeaways, and recommendation. So let’s get started.
The Book:
Now, I’m going to start this post by getting the drama out of the way. If you don’t know there have been accusations on Rachel Hollis plagiarizing and using other people’s ideas on her Instagram and some of her books. Honestly, I don’t know if that’s true or not. When my darling sister (who is an author) found out that I was listening to this book, I received a decent lecture. For some reason, this made me want to listen to the book more….call me crazy but I had to see for myself.
In Girl, Stop Apologizing is about getting you to understand that it’s perfectly alright for you to have goals and dreams. It gives you helpful ideas on how to go after your goals and to stop making excuses for yourself.
Something else that stood out to me in this book was that even the most successful women have help. Yes, although they seem like they are superwomen, they, in fact, have assistance. Either in the house or in your business. Trust me, this is reassuring. When you have a side hustle and you’re looking at someone’s story, don’t get discouraged because they most likely have people helping them. And that’s ok.
The Narration:
So Rachel Hollis is the book’s author and narrator. I’m always happy when self-help and biography book authors choose to narrate their own books. From my experience, it always adds a personal touch and makes their message more relatable. Now, Rachel Hollis is a motivational speaker and fantastic at marketing, so of course, she’s pretty awesome at narrating her book.
The Takeaways:
Now, these thoughts are not new, and I’m sure they’ve addressed in several books and publications. In my opinion, Rachel Hollis is quite good at reaching her audience. She comes across as down to earth and ordinary kind of gal. That resonates with people. If you can see this “everyday” gal who is just like you make it, it makes you feel like you can too.
And hey, I’m not knocking it. I’ve honestly read her last book and enjoyed it. Sometimes it’s just nice to hear in order to give you a good kick in the butt. And if it motivates one person to follow their dreams, then who cares how this information got to them. I’m not saying you shouldn’t cite your sources, because you most definitely should.
My Recommendation
Overall, it was a good book. Again, the content is nothing new, but if you need someone who’s relatable and motivating to give you this information, then it’s perfect for you.
A couple of things to call out is that this book has some religious and “mom” undertones. I’m neither of those things, so overlooked those pieces, but if you’re the type that can’t, this might not be the book for you. And girl, get your people to cite those sources.
