Today, I will be reviewing Work Party. I’m back on my audible books, which is how I’m “reading” books these days. I found there’s a particular genre of books that are perfect for the Audible platform, boss babe books.
Speaking of boss babes, Jaclyn Johnson is the creator of Create & Cultivate. Jaclyn created the ultimate boss babe site and conference that assists entrepreneurs in all aspects of running a business.
The Book
In the book Work Party How to Create and Cultivate The Career of Your Dreams starts with Jaclyn Johnson telling the story of how she was able to create the career of her dreams. Her story talks about her initial goal of being in the corporate world but soon realized that she was on the entrepreneurial path.
She started on the cusp of the social media and blogging phase, which most people at that time weren’t paying attention too. She went through challenges in the corporate world, issues with a previous partner, and dating.
Eventually, she noticed a need that wasn’t being fulfilled with female entrepreneurs. No one was helping them or sharing their story, so she creates a business that filled that gap.
She also shares advice on running a business and the stories of other business owners (such as Rebecca Minkoff, Allie Webb, and Kendra Scott). She shares 10 career commandments:
- Start by Starting
- Be a Fucking Pleasure to Work With
- Bring in the Experts
- Collaboration over Competition
- Don’t Let the Bastards Get You Down
- Know Your Shit
- Money Is Power
- Find Your Tribe
- Resiliency Required
- Pay It Forward
The Narration
Jaclyn Johnson narrates this book. I’m always a fan of the author telling their own story. For some reason, it always seems more true to life.
The Review
I truly loved this book. I’m always so impressed by hearing the backstories of successful women. When you hear the ups and downs of someone’s story, it’s incredibly relatable.
Another aspect of this book that I enjoyed was the business advice. Jaclyn discusses contracts, getting legal and accounting advice, the different types of funding, payment terms, and tips on how to run a successful business.
I found the business advice is incredibly tangible and something I haven’t seen in many books. These tips are things that you can bring into every aspect of your business.
