Back to Basics

You see the term “basics” when shopping, in magazines, and on social media. What does it mean for an item to be known as “basics.” Overall it means simplicity in clothing. The item is usually a single color and a traditional fit. I’ve often referred to clothes and shoes as basics as you can wear them with most things.

There are a few reasons why I wear basics. Mainly, I love how versatile these pieces are to wear. You can mix and match with different accessories to create a whole new look each time you style them. A perfect example is this basic olive green dress I have in this post’s pictures. I can wear this dress with white sneakers and a baseball cap to create a more casual look.

In the photos, I’m choosing a more dressed up version of this basic dress. I like to dress it up with a pair of neutral heels (also a basic), a denim jacket, and a gold tassel necklace. If I want a more work attire outfit, a pair of pumps or booties with a blazer will create that look. It’s the same dress; however, the way you style the look will determine the outcome of the outfit. The beauty of basics is that you can mix and match to create a new style each time you wear it.

Basics are “essential” when creating a “capsule wardrobe.” This type of wardrobe usually consists of around 30ish items that you can mix and match to create new looks. People will create capsule wardrobes to save time and money.

Another great reason to have basics in your closet is that they are usually very comfortable. At least in the case of dresses, pants, and t-shirts. I have some basic black pumps, and I wouldn’t necessarily say they were comfortable. The dress in the photo is a soft jersey fabric, which makes the dress a loose and stretchy fit. I could seriously wear this dress all day.

I highly recommend adding some basics to your wardrobe. It will not only save you money by allowing you to wear more with a simple garment, but it will also enable you to be creative when styling your looks. So let me know your thoughts on basics?
