I just finished reading Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and I have one word. “Wow!” I read this book in the course of a weekend, which, for me, is quick.
The Book
This book is based on a fictional band from the 1970s. The book is set up in the form of the author interviewing the band members. It almost felt like you were reading something that you would see in a documentary about a band.
Daisy Jones is this talent and beautiful socialite in Los Angeles, with an incredible talent for singing. She, as most artists in the 1970s, lives the “sex, drugs, and rock & roll” lifestyle. The Six is a band by lead singer and songwriter Billy Dunne that rises into the music scene quickly.
The story takes you through (in chronological order) how each character started in the music scene and how they become a band. You hear each character’s perspective and begin to learn their experience from entering the music scene to the height of their fame, to their eventual break-up.
You also learn about what happens to each character behind the scenes in their personal life. They struggle with drugs and alcohol, their lives outside of the band, and the egos within the group.
The Takeaways
I highly recommend this book. The style of the story was so unique and yet still kept you engrossed in each page and storyline. Taylor Jenkins Reid’s characters and a story felt so real that honestly, I had to Google to see if it was based on a real band. I can see this book becoming a movie soon.
