So far, my last two book reviews have been in the non-fiction category (here and here). However, for this review, I wanted to share a fictional story. I usually read self-improvement books or stories based on actual events, but now and then I love a good made-up story.
The Book:
This book is a coming of age story about a young girl’s (Kya) life living in the marshes of North Carolina. She, for the most part, raised herself and learned how to survive. Throughout her years, she was faced with figuring out how to make money to eat, the prejudices of people from town, learning about love, and finding out about herself.
The story starts in the 1950s when Kya is young. It quickly leads you into her family dynamics and will show her perception of the world as well as the world’s perception of her. She has a lack of trust in most people and things, mostly because she hasn’t often seen kindness. The one thing she knows and trusts is her marsh.
As she goes through her adolescence, she starts to create friendships and even encounters romance. She discovers life on her own through nature and those few friends. When she enters adulthood, she finds, as most young women do, heartache. She also finds out her true calling in life.
Ultimately, this is a story about a survivor. When there are obstacles in her way, she finds ways to overcome them against all the odds.
The TakeAways:
I highly recommend this book. Honestly, I read it in two days and could barely put it down. There is romance, family, friendships, violence, and a murder mystery, all tied into one novel. What more could you want in a single book?
The author, Delia Owens, did a fantastic job at keeping me, the reader, in the story throughout the book. To me, that’s always a sign of a great book.
