One of my favorite cocktails to make is a French 75. Not only does the name sound cool, but they are very simple to make. I found this drink a few years ago while perusing Pinterest to find fancy drinks to make at my New Year’s party. This party was last minute, so I was not looking for anything that would require a lot of work. I stumbled across this fabulous drink, and it was a hit at the party. Now I’m going to host an event or party if the affair calls for a fancy drink the French 75 is my go-to cocktail.
The French 75 cocktail can be a drink for so many occasions. This drink is perfect for celebrations such as New Year’s, themed parties, bridal and engagements moments, promotions, and birthdays. Another fun idea would be to have this cocktail for brunch instead of the traditional Mimosa. Or perhaps there is no reason but just to enjoy a fun drink.
The ingredients are simple which you can purchase at your local market or liquor store. This cocktail also will only take a few minutes to make. You combine the champagne, gin, sugar (or syrup), and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker. Shake to mix the ingredients and then pour into your champagne flute. Be careful when you take the lid off the cocktail shaker since the champagne is carbonated, shaking can cause pressure to build. Garnish the flute with a lemon twist, which adds an extra bit of flare to your drink. Sometimes for an additional kick of sugar and a visual effect, I will put a sugar cube into the glass.
In my research, I found that this drink dates back to 1915 (Wikipedia) originally had cognac but was replaced by gin. When searching on Pinterest, there are a lot of variations on this drink if you wanted to get even more creative. I plan on trying a few variations myself to keep things lively.
For one drink you will need the following:
- 2 oz champagne
- 1 oz gin
- 1 sugar cube (or a dash of simple syrup)
- ½ oz lemon juice
- 1 lemon twist (garnish)
I got my original recipe from Martha Stewart’s site here.
