Color blocking is a great way to mix up your wardrobe. You might be asking yourself “what is color blocking?” Well, its a way wearing complimentary or contrasting chunks of colors together in a single outfit. This style became popular a few years back, but it’s still trendy. A perfect (and recent) example of color blocking is 4th of July outfits. For the most part, you’re wearing red, white, and blue. I might wear a solid red skirt with a solid blue top (or vice versa). Are you starting to get it?
This color scheme can also exist in patterns as well. It’s most prevalent in stripes and geometric patterns where several solid colors will appear on one garment. If you’re wanting to dip your toes into color blocking but are unsure how to begin, try keeping the colors in the same shade (tone and tint).
This outfit is my first experiment with the color block look. In this example, I’m wearing a solid red skirt and a lavender top with the same purple hued shoes. Now, I could have chosen a pink top and shoes or wore a blue skirt instead. Either would have been appropriate.
I’m excited to experiment with different ways to utilize this approach to my outfits in the future. If you have a solid colored top or bottom, try finding another complimentary color to pair with it. How do you color block?
