This time of the year is the most stressful dealing with family holiday stress. Now, if this is not you, that is impressive and can I spend the holidays with you? However, for most people families are a leading cause of stress this time of year.
Now holidays are not big in my family, for this post, I did my research on the “why” behind what causes the stress and the best solutions for dealing with this stress. I went around interviewing my friends who I have heard (whether they know it or not) deal with anxiety with family around the holidays.
Find “You” Time
It’s important when spending a significant amount of time with your family, that you find time for yourself. Now, this could come in the form of taking a walk, chilling in your room wearing a sheet mask for 20 minutes, or finding somewhere to workout. It doesn’t really matter what it is; you need time to recharge.
Think Before You Speak
As often in life, we sometimes blurt out our thoughts and emotions. However, it’s always best to think about your words and their potential effect and tone before letting them slip from your mouth. This tip will save hurt feelings, grudges, and you, coming up with the courage to apologize. Remember, it’s okay to take your time before you respond.
Don’t Act in Anger
Above all else, do NOT act in anger. Your judgment is usually not the best when emotions are high. In this case, you want to let yourself calm down and start thinking logically prior to acting. As with the tip above, this will avoid several bad situations.
Find an Outlet
If you find yourself frustrated or your stress is high, find an outlet such as music or journaling. Again, this will give you time to recharge and get back to your wonderful self. For me, a good run always clears my head and brings me back to my center. I recommend finding a coping outlet that works best for you before you visit your family in order to be prepared.
Alcohol is Your Frienemy
Alcohol is often a great way to deal with family stress. However, it can impair your judgment. Being drunk or tipsy can lead to irrational actions (like speaking without thinking and acting in anger). Just be sure that when alcohol is in the picture, you’re in a happy place. If all else fails, see the first tip (find “you” time) and drink alone.
Hopefully, these are all precautionary, and you will have a lovely time with your family. I mean, one can be optimistic, right.
