Summer weather is upon us, which can make it challenging to dress for the office. I recently had a co-worker ask me “what do I wear on hot days that doesn’t make me look like a skank-a-saurus-rex in the office” (that term made me crack up, btw). Basically, she was asking how to wear as little as possible but be suitable for work. She had an excellent point, which made me spend some time thinking about office-appropriate clothes during the summer.
A lot of this has to do with the dress code at your job. Some jobs (like mine) are more relaxed than others. You should always default to your company’s outlined dress code, which can usually be reviewed with you when you started working. However, a good rule of thumb is if you’re questioning it, don’t go with it.
Going back to answering my friend’s question, I wanted to share a few pieces that will work for the office on those hot days.
Sleeveless
Now, I’m not talking spaghetti straps or strapless when I say sleeveless. Although, some places of work it’s completely acceptable. I’m talking either no sleeves or short sleeves which will not only cover any bra straps but will still allow your arms to be free of fabrics. Lightweight fabrics such as cotton or linen are breathable.
Midi Skirts
The midi skirt is my favorite length for a skirt for the office. With this length, you never have to wonder if your skirt is too short. In the words of Goldilocks, “these skirts are just right.” There are so many cute midi styles to choose from as well.
Pastels and Whites
Coincidence that I’m wearing whites and pastels in this post? Well, a little yes and a little no. Regardless, wearing light colors on a hot day keeps the sun away (sort of). Wearing light colors keeps you feeling cool and gives off a summer vibe.
Lightweight Pants
Aside from midi skirts, wearing lightweight pants is one of my favorite pieces to wear on hot days. However, if skirts aren’t you’re thing, then this is perfect. By wearing lightweight pants, it allows for more movement and breathability. Check out my post on Palazzo Pants, which are perfect for the summer heat.
There are so many ways you can mix and match the pieces above as well. One thing to note, if you do work in an office, the air conditioning could potentially be running on high during those hot days. If that’s the case, then you should bring a blazer or a cardigan for the indoors.
So when picking out your clothes for work, always check the weather. You may need to incorporate some of these hot summer day pieces. I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas on work-appropriate pieces for those hot days. Please leave a comment below.
