Do you shop your closet? I mean, really? I’m talking go into the depths of your closet and create new looks out of the clothes that you already own. It’s not an easy thing to do, which is why more people don’t do it. But don’t worry, I’m here to talk you through it so it will become second nature.
Why shop your closet? Well, I mean besides, why would you not want to wear the clothes that you buy. Regardless if your closet is full of slow fashion or fast fashion pieces, and if it’s carefully curated, wearing the clothes hanging up in your closet is the most sustainable.
Shopping your closet is more than just wearing the same 5 outfits in rotation unless that’s your jam. It’s about finding how to create more outfits out of those pieces. So are you ready to get into it?
How To Shop Your Closet
1. Get To Know Your Wardrobe
If it’s been a while since you’ve really gone through your closet, you may want to start by revisiting some of the pieces that you own. Now, I’m not talking about a closet cleanout (although that is always a good idea), but just getting familiar with what’s in your wardrobe.
2. Create And Use An Inspiration/Mood Board
Now, if you don’t already have a mood board for your favorite looks, I highly recommend creating one. You can use these looks as inspiration using the pieces that you already own. I prefer using Pinterest as I can add the looks that I like from many different apps or magazines. If you want to know how to create a style mood board, check out our article here.
3. Set Aside Time
Creating new looks with what you own isn’t easy, so it will take some time. Pick a day out of the week to set aside 1-2 hours for creating new looks with your wardrobe. Don’t worry; this includes clean-up time as it may get a little messy.
4. Experiment With Your Style
Take this time to experiment and have fun with your style. Try combinations and different styling techniques that you haven’t tried before. If you’re at a loss, check out my Instagram Reels (here); I share a ton of different styling tips on tricks.
5. Take Photos Of Your Looks
Yes, take photos of your favorite looks. Why? Because you’ll want to keep them to reference when you’re getting ready in the morning. Also, looking at a photo of you in an outfit might give you a different perspective on how that outfit looks.
In Closing
Lastly, of course, would be to wear the outfits that you create. This is the method that I use to create new looks, and it has been extremely rewarding to take my looks to another level. I say this with extreme confidence; it takes way more style to wear what you own than to buy something new.
