Have you ever saw an outfit with ruffles that looked amazing on the mannequin or your favorite blogger, but then when you try the item on, you look more like a clown. Um, hello, me! Every time I try on something with ruffles, it just doesn’t work. It’s always a bit depressing because it looks so cute on everyone else.
Now, I’m not much of a ruffle girl (no frills and fluff for me), but I do like the occasion ruffle in my wardrobe. So before I’ve completely given up on the trend, I’ve found a few ways to wearing this particular style of clothing without, well let’s say looking like a court jester (Huzzah! Yes, I’m a total nerd, deal with it). Here are a few guidelines that I have started to incorporate into my ruffle shopping.
Go Small
When I’m choosing ruffles, the bigger is better does not come into my mind. Again, we’re the ruffle challenged, so go small. The more delicate the ruffle, the more you will be able to wear them. Even if you love ruffles but are new to wearing this style, start small and gradually ease into more significant ruffles. If you start by wearing the biggest ruffles, you are in danger of not feeling comfortable with wearing them and give up.
Choose Based on Your Bodytype
Find the area on your body that looks good with ruffles. Now, this might lead to a lot of returned or unworn items (guilty), but you have to find out where ruffles look best on you. For me, it below the waist. I can’t seem to wear them well on my neckline or around my waist, due to my body type. I’ve found a few pieces of swimwear that have a small ruffle around the shoulder and neckline, which look fantastic.
On the Sleeve or Cuff
Another easy way to wear ruffles is on the cuff or the sleeve of your top. Now, I’m not talking the pirate kind (which I’ve totally done circa 1993), but something simple. Just a delicate detail on my cuff or sleeve.
Shoes and Handbags
Now if you’re completely opposed to wearing ruffles on your clothes, another option is to wear ruffles on your shoes and handbags. I would not recommend at the same time (unless they are a matching set specifically tailored for each other). This way you can feel comfortable and confident in your everyday style, but still add that bit of romantic flair more subtly.
Now, if you want to incorporate ruffles into your wardrobe, select all or a few of these that best suit you. I would love to hear from you my fellow ruffle challenged friends on how you incorporate ruffles into your look.
I do want to make a side note regarding the dress that I’m wearing in this picture. It’s adorable, but if you have a slightly larger ass (like me), it is less than ideal. While walking around, I was always pulling the dress down. Also, there is no easy way to bend over in this dress without showing the world your bum. So purchase with caution, and perhaps size up.
