If you didn’t remember, I had a “Frugal February.” Really, all this meant that I stopped shopping for an entire month. Yes, I know. I can’t even believe it myself. Why would someone do that to themselves, right!
Well, it started with a big closet sweep that I did (ironically before I watched the Netflix series “Tidying Up“). I noticed that I was spending a ton of money on clothes that I didn’t wear. Not to mention my BF would comment and take note that I was getting an online shopping package daily. Normally, that wouldn’t be an issue except, I’m supposed to be saving money (whoopsie).
Well, I did it! I didn’t buy anything for an entire month. Trust me; I can’t even believe it myself. Throughout the month, I had several mixed emotions. Some days were harder than others, but overall I did learn a few things.
1. I Saved Money
The first and most apparent, insight was that I saved a ton of money. I want to emphasize the word “ton” because it showed me how much money I was actually spending on clothes, shoes, and accessories. I’m not going to share the exact amount, but let’s say that it was an entire rent payment. If you’re really curious, google rent in San Luis Obispo, CA.
2. Shopping Brought me a False Sense of Joy
Have you heard of retail therapy? It’s a real thing, let me tell ya. Ironically, it was more than just new things. It was the joy I would feel when I saw a package at my door (think of when you open gifts at Christmas). When I’m stressed or overworked, I could look forward to a package. I could admire a new pair of beautiful shoes for days. During this little experiment, I was forced to find other ways of being happy, even through hard times.
3. I Learned Self Control
Since I’m a fashion blogger, I constantly look at merchandise in stores, current sales, upcoming trends, etc. And of course, I want them all (no joke). In the past, I would simply buy it without a second thought. However, this month, I had to control my shopping urges. Yes, you could say I have a slight shopping problem (ha). Over time this became easier and easier until it wasn’t an issue.
4. I Don’t Need a Closet Full of New Clothes
One of the biggest lessons that this experience taught me was that I don’t need a ton of new clothes. If I’m more intentional with my purchases, then I can easily shop my closet with my existing pieces. In fact, I found a ton of new ideas that I’m excited to share in future posts.
Surprisingly, I feel a sense of accomplishment from the whole experience. Although this is not sustainable with my lifestyle, I do think that I can incorporate new ways to limit my shopping. The key is to remember what I learned from this past month and hold myself accountable for the future. My goal is to continue to budget better in the clothing shopping department and be intentional when I do shop.
