I recently had a birthday, which always makes me reflect what lessons I’m learning in my 30’s. When getting older, you start to understand more about life and yourself. This understanding mostly comes from making mistakes (sometimes several) and learning from them. Wisdom will also come from taking a look at yourself and your actions. Previously I wrote a post “What I learned in my 20’s, ” and I wanted to share some of the things that I’m learning in my 30’s.
Finances
My finances are something that I wished I figured out early on in my life. If you don’t understand them or take time to learn about your finances, you will be paying for them well into your 30’s and possibly even 40’s. It’s best to get a head start on getting your finances straight in your 20’s and early 30’s. If you have student loans and credit card debt, this is especially so. Something to also consider is investing in your retirement. I know what you’re thinking, “I’m too young to think about retirement.” Wrong! It’s the perfect time to start thinking about how to save and invest your money so that you can prepare yourself for a better future.
Learning to say “No.”
Yes, you heard me (well kind of because I wrote it)! Saying “no” is one of the best advice I can give you. I know if your 20’s all you want to do is please people and try to get ahead. By saying “yes” to everyone, often means that you are constantly saying “yes” to everything, which can lead to becoming burnt out and overwhelmed. It’s alright saying “no” to people. If you don’t have the time to do something or don’t want to do something, just say no.
Change is inevitable
Dealing with “change” I believe, is hard for most people. For me, understanding change (especially when you can’t control it) took some time. Change will always occur, and nothing will ever stay the same, that is what you have to grasp. Trust my advice and roll with the punches and try to find the positives in the change.
Embrace Age
Age is something that most women struggle with and often try to hide. It’s a stereotypical joke that women will lie about their age or have several “30th” birthdays. I will say in my early 30’s there was a struggle with the idea of being in my 30’s. I would think “oh shit; I’m 31.” Your 30’s is also when you start seeing the signs of aging. Your skin, metabolism, and body changes. I have come to terms with age and am embracing it with open arms. There’s not much you can do to stop aging, so own it. I figure, there’s nothing wrong with being an old babe (wink).
The saying “the older you are, the wiser you are” is entirely accurate. I’m sure I have more to learn in life, and I’m excited about what other adventures and wisdom are still to come.
