The romper phase in fashion has been going strong for the past 5+ years. I love the look as it was a very vintage and classic look that I have always admired. As a child, I would watch old movies and appreciated the vintage look. I also believe that just like every woman should have a little black dress in their closet, they should also have a little black romper.
The romper originated in kids wear in the early 1900s, but showed itself in fashion for women in the 40’s/50’s and again in the 1970’s. The 1940’s and 1950’s version had a tailored and often includes an attachable skirt. You can see this look in movies like “How to Marry a Millionaire” from 1953. Betty Grable wore such a romper in the fashion show scene (super cute movie, btw). In the 1970’s rompers became more casual and often made of terry cloth or jersey materials.
So when the romper became popular again, I was very excited. However, the style is very hard to fit my body type (very straight without a lot of definitive curves). I have tried on so many styles and with no luck of finding one that fit appropriately. Consequently, this disappointment had been going on for years. This past year, I was taking a trip out to Las Vegas and wanted something that I could wear during the day and night that was casual yet dressy. Immediately, I thought a romper would do just the trick. So I looked online (daring, I know) and found a few that I was willing to try out. After all, I can always return what doesn’t fit, so there is no real risk.
I’m so glad I took that chance because I finally found a romper that fit me pretty well. I’m not going to lie, I bought a few and returned all of them but one, this little black romper. The material is viscose and spandex, which makes it lightweight and comfortable. The style of this particular black romper can be a casual or dressy look, which was the perfect for the look I wanted to achieve.
For this post, I am showing the little black romper in a few different ways in order to highlight the flexibility of this style. For the first look, I have a chambray shirt tied over the romper, to give it more of a casual look and perfect for the daytime. I then add a black leather(like) clutch and a pair of espadrilles. For the second look, I am simply wearing the romper with a cute macrame backpack and the same espadrilles. I have a classic straw hat for both looks to keep the casual yet dressy vibe.
The moral of this story is do not give up on rompers. I am living proof that there is a perfect one out there for you somewhere, so keep searching. You will find the romper that you were meant to wear. To help you in your search, I have picked out a few of my favorites below that might catch your eye.
