So what are “Mom Jeans” you might be asking? Well, in true “Rebecca” fashion, I googled and researched this term. The traditional meaning of the term is “jeans that are unflattering and unfashionable.” In my opinion, these were jeans your mom would wear from the 80’s-90’s, although fashion moved to a lower rise in the early 21st century. However, within the past few years, mom jeans have started making a comeback.
Let’s start with the features that define a pair of mom jeans. Traditionally these jeans are high-waisted and loose around the hips and butt area. Due to the previously stated features, this can/does make your butt look long and wide. The style will highlight your natural waist as well.
I styled my mom jeans in a few different ways, so I wanted to share these looks to inspire you.
Style 1
In the first look, I decided to keep it a bit casual. I chose to wear a very basic cropped tee from Hanes x Karla (which I freakin love). Since the jeans are so high waisted, the amount of skin showing is minimal. Also since one of the key features in this style of jeans is the waist, the cropped top really shows it off. Now, here’s where I get sassy with it. I wear my red boots and beret. The pants are slightly cropped, which really show off those amazing boots.

Style 2
In the second look, I’m feeling the rocker vibe. Unlike the first look, this is more of a relaxed and loose fit. I’ve tucked my loose fitting shirt into the jeans, still showing off that high waist. These jeans are a faded black and super distressed, which was different from the traditional style of the look above. I’m wearing one of my favorite faux furs. The leopard print really glams up the outfit.

Another question you might ask is “why would someone wear jeans that are unflattering?” Well, what is flattering is entirely different for everyone. Also, there are so many different styles of mom jeans; you just have to find the one that fits your body the best (which is the same for any pants/jeans that you buy).
I recently just bought a pair of mom jeans because “why the hell not.” The high-waisted fit in jeans and pants are my favorite right now. They are flattering, especially since it accentuates my natural body type. The older I get my body changes form, the more of the “muffin top” I get with, the lower rise. However, that’s not to say that I won’t go back to a lower rise, but I’m happy with the high rises for now.
