3 Tips While Thrifting
1. Shop Consciously
Even while thrifting, be sure to shop consciously. Ensure that it’s something that you need, or if you really want something new, be sure that the pieces you buy will work cohesively with your wardrobe. You still want to be building a wardrobe that you’re able to have a low cost per wear (meaning you’ll wear each piece multiple times). You also want to make sure that you’re not taking away from others who rely on thrift shopping as their main way to acquire clothes.
2. Check For Quality
Although clothes are usually checked for defects when you thrift, it’s possible that what you purchase will have something slightly wrong with it. Check for holes, stains, snags, pilling, etc. If you find something, determine if you can fix it and/or if it’s something that you can live with and won’t prevent you from wearing the piece.
3. Allow Yourself Time
If you’re going into a thrift store (or even while shopping online), allow yourself time to look through the stores. Usually, pieces are divided by sizes and style, but sometimes items are placed in other sizes. Online, you’re able to filter by your favorite brands, sizes, and colors, but it’s still a hunt.
Closing Statement
Why thrift? Thrifting is a great way to start being more sustainable with your wardrobe. Currently, on average, people wear their clothing 7x before they discard it. So that tells me that thrift stores and online resellers have a ton of great (like-new) pieces ready to be worn.
