My style is always evolving. However, I recently have been assessing my style and the pieces in my wardrobe. There are several questions that I would ask myself. Do my outfits express me? Do I wear pieces once? Or for that matter did I wear them at all? Where is my money going?
Over the past few months, I’ve been seriously going through my closet and found something astonishing. I came up with huge bags of clothes and most of those items still had the price tag on them. I didn’t even wear
I spent so much money on clothes last year (and the year before) on items that I only wore once or have never worn. To me, that is wasteful. So I came up with a plan to not only hone in on my style but to cut my spending as well.
When looking at my outfits, I took note of what I was actually wearing and the items that were getting tossed in a bag. Yes, there was a distinct trend here. When looking through Pinterest or magazines, I would take note of the outfits that I would wear versus what I just thought was a kickass outfit. After a while, I came up with a few guidelines for me to follow when shopping.
Focus on Timeless Pieces
I will be focusing more on timeless pieces in my wardrobe rather than fast trends. These are the articles of clothes or shoes that will still be in style throughout the years. Now, this doesn’t mean that I will save money. When buying something that you want to wear for a while, you should invest in quality. Otherwise, you will be continually buying that item every year. However, only do what you’re budget allows.
Some examples of
Spend Minimally on Trends
Now even though I want to focus on timeless pieces, that’s not to say that I still won’t be buying trends. Everyone loves a good trendy look. However, the goal is to spend minimally on trends. This way I don’t spend a lot of clothes that end up getting tossed out at the end of each season. I’m not going to lie; this is going to be a tough one for me.
Look for Versatility
When shopping, I will be looking for versatility in pieces. What does this mean? Well, I buy a lot of items (mostly shoes or jackets) that I can’t interchange with multiple outfits or wear very often. So in the future, I plan on buying wardrobe items that are more wearable.
Shop My Closet More Often
Now that I’ve gone through (and through again) my closet, I’m going to be shopping my closet more often (if you haven’t checked out my Shopping Your Closet post, be sure to do so). I still have so many clothes that are timeless and versatile, that will go with new and existing.
Stick with a Color Theme
When going through my closet, I found that I had a lot of colors that I didn’t particularly like or wear. The clothes (or shoes) were cute, and I love the colors, but they weren’t my style. Needless to say, they got thrown in the bag. So this year, I will be planning on sticking with a color theme but still allowing myself to stray a little (if it’s justified and on rare occasions).
Closing Thoughts
So here’s to a new year and a whole new outlook on my style. I’m hoping that this will not only allow me to wear more of my clothes but also make my bank account happy.
