It’s 2020, which means not only a new year but a new decade. In order to look ahead to my future, I find that I have to give gratitude to my past.
Last year was incredibly challenging. I was struggling with depression, unlike any that I’ve encountered in my past. My day job was increasingly becoming an unhealthy environment. And my family was going through tough times due to my father’s stroke.
With that said, this past year was also the kick-off of my self-improvement journey. The reason that this is so important is that it marks a pivotal time in my life.
My Self-Improvement Journey
Now, I’m sure you would all like to hear that I just woke up one day, and it was all magically fixed, but this was not the case. I instead took the approach of actually working through my issues and unhappiness. Here are some of the things that I did (and am still doing).
Therapy
I attend a therapy session once a week, where we have specific objectives that I’m trying to work through. Therapy gets a bad rap, but honestly, IMO it’s something that I wish that everyone would do regularly. Now a therapist isn’t going to fix all of your problems, that’s your job. However, they will talk through your troubles and give you tools on how to work through them. I’m not going to lie; this was difficult.
Change My Behavior
I decided to make a conscious effort to change my behavior. This behavior change came in many forms. First, I decided to become more positive. For example, instead of saying, “I can’t,” I said, “I can.” Second, I stopped taking part in activities that would increase any depression (such as all-night binge drinking – check out my article here). And third, I stopped associating with people who exhibit the behaviors that I was trying to change.
Stop Making Excuses
I’ve been the queen of excuses. I would even bet that you make excuses regularly, and you don’t even know it. These excuses come in the form “I don’t have time” or “it’s too difficult.” I’m not 100% clear on when this realization hit me, but I believe I was listening to a podcast on excuses and identified with it. Trust me; this also was not easy. I still catch myself doing it from time to time.
Understand My Priorities
I sat down and wrote out my priorities. By doing this, it allowed me to think through the things that were going to support my life. These priorities created focus and acted as a guide for my actions.
Established a Daily Routine
I’ve posted on my routine numerous times in my social media, and I stand by it. By creating a daily practice of things that make me feel good or improve my wellbeing, it has ensured that I have a positive body and mind. It’s this daily routine that keeps my day on balance.
My 2020 Goals
So, what everyone is waiting for, what are my goals for 2020. I decided not to make any specific personal goals, but have decided to continue to my self-improvement journey. I intend to keep the practice of intention and purpose every day and with everything that I do.
Closing Statements
I’ve already seen the positive changes come into my life from my self-improvement journey. Others around me have also noticed a difference. All because I decided to put what I wanted to become into action. So my advice to you all is to act on the change that you want in your life. Be the person that you want to become. It will NOT be easy, but it WILL be rewarding.

I highly recommend it. It’s changed my life. It’s a lot of work, and you have to search for the right therapist, but worth it.
