New Year’s resolutions are always a loaded term. For most people, including myself these are goals you set up for a new year that you don’t always follow through with by the end of the year.
I’m always so pumped at the start of the year, full of energy and hope. By mid-year and the end of the year, my energy is spent, and my hopes have mostly given up. Why is that? Is it me? What’s the reason why I can’t keep up these promises to myself and
After many, many, many years of failed goals, I’ve finally nailed down a couple of reasons why I can’t keep my resolutions. So I’m going to share my thoughts with you because maybe you can relate.

1. I Make Too Many Resolutions
Each year, I’m always so eager to start on the right foot and get shit done. So for me, I make too many goals for myself. I think I made about 10 resolutions. They were the typical goals, stay in shape by eating better, keep up on my self-care, go to the gym, and yadda, yadda yadda. So by the first couple months in the year, I was overwhelmed and had to give up on a few. Then I gradually kept giving up.
2. My Goals Are Too Big
Yes, you can make goals that are too big to achieve. It’s perfectly fine to make big goals, but they need to be broken down into achievable milestones. If you set the goal, I’m going to lose 20 pounds this year and don’t have milestones or checkpoints; then you most likely will not lose a single pound.
3. I’m Too Vague With What I Want To Achieve
Last year, I set the goal to take better care of my skin. What does that really mean? Did I have a plan? No, I didn’t. So I went into the year just knowing that I needed to do something. I bought several skin cremes and lotion but didn’t really set up a regime. So naturally, this goal kind of fell by the wayside. It would have been better if I created a morning and nightly routine that I wanted to do daily. Or even a self-care Sunday plan. By giving your goals detail and context, you know exactly what you want to achieve.
4. I Got Lazy
I’m not quite sure how it happened, it was either laziness or a lack of energy due to working ridiculous hours, but I allowed myself to give up on my goals. I gave all the excuses in the world. The phrases “I will do it later” or “I’m too tired” were continually in my vocabulary. If goals were easy to accomplish, then everyone would be hitting them. Resolutions are hard work to keep up with and if you don’t want to put in the work, don’t make them. It’s as simple as that.
The Plan
Yes, I have a plan for a plan. Maybe it’s more like a promise to myself. For me, my New Year’s resolutions will be something that’s obtainable and clearly defined so that I understand precisely what I’m working towards next year. Keep an eye out for my first post in the new year where I will be sharing my goals, my promise.
