I’m just going to be honest, I have trouble staying active throughout the year. There are times when I’m all about it and in my fitness groove. Then there are times where I would rather be lazy or find myself too busy. Usually, during this time I’m making excuses like “I’m too tired” or “I will workout tomorrow.” I always regret these excuses later, especially when I start working out again. I find that although staying active is difficult, it is achievable. I have a few helpful tips that keep me motivated and active.
The first way to stay motivated is to find an activity that you enjoy. Yes, being active can be fun. If you like swimming, then find a local pool where you can swim laps. If you like soccer, find some pickup games. I guarantee you can find almost anything where you live. This activity doesn’t have to be the trendy fitness of the moment, stick to what you like. Which means if yoga is the new hotness in fitness, but you don’t like it, don’t go to yoga. If hip hop dancing is your jam, find a way to shake that butt. I always recommend trying something out at least once so you can make that assessment. However, don’t force yourself to do something that you don’t enjoy. If you do, this is when the excuses start.
The second way that I stay active is that I like to mix up my fitness routine. Mixing up your routine might not work for everyone, so if you are a creature of habit, stick to what works. However, I need to switch up my routine or I will get bored. Throughout the week, I will do a few different fitness activities. I will run every day, which will vary from 1-3 miles. I will also have a day where I swim laps and another where I take a kettlebells class for strength training. Changing my routine not only works different parts of my body but keeps my brain engaged.
Finally the last helpful way to staying active is to have fun and recognize that being active is making you feel better. Earlier when I talked about my excuses like “I’m tired” or “I’m too busy,” I find that this is because I’m not staying active. If I stop working out, I start to feel tired and sluggish. It’s not only my body that slows down but my brain. Regardless of how busy I am, I will always try to get a run in to keep my head clear. It’s for this reason; I have a love/hate relationship with running. Over that past couple of years, I have started to enjoy running because it makes me feel good. If at any point I stop having fun with one of my activities, I will switch it up and try something new.
Staying active is necessary for life. When you are young, it helps you develop healthy habits and will help you age better. When you are older, staying active will help keep your body and mind working in all the ways you want it to work. I hope these tips are helpful for you all. I would love to find out from you, what keeps you staying active?
