It’s not an understatement that staying fit during the holidays is no easy tasks. It’s my personal belief that even the fittest person struggles this time of year. There’s so much food and gatherings that it’s difficult to keep up with your regular routine. Personally, this is where I struggle and, I’m willing to bet it’s the same for you. So I’ve created some tips to help you (and myself) to follow this holiday season.
Keep Consist
Consistency is vital this time of year. If at all possible, keep up with your regular workout schedule. If you don’t think you can, try to reduce your fitness routine (for example, if you workout 5 days a week reduce it to 3). It’s important to keep a schedule even if it’s not the same. Consistency will not only help with staying fit, but it will help with holiday stress as well.
Food is Essential
Just because it’s the holidays doesn’t mean you have a free pass to eat whatever you want. Trust me that excuse is the easiest thing to do, but you will regret it come the new year. It’s okay to splurge for gatherings and holidays, but try to eat healthy the rest of the time. Do you really need that cheeseburger on that random Tuesday? Probably not, so eat smart.
Something is Better than Nothing
If you’ve found that your workout schedule is reduced and your eating habits are particularly bad, find moments to get in some activity. If you have a desk job, try standing up more or get a balance ball to sit on. If you’re watching tv, try getting in some abs or squats (yes, I do this). Go for a walk around your neighborhood or a park. Download your favorite podcast, audiobook, or just your favorite playlist, but get out there and move.
Don’t Just Give Up
Don’t just give up on your health during holidays. Not only do you not want to be struggling at the gym in January, but you want to keep your stress levels down. Just because you had a donut one morning, doesn’t give you a hall pass the rest of the day to eat like shit. The same goes for fitness. Don’t skip the gym, a run, or even a walk multiple days in a row. It’s okay if you give in to temptation just be sure to get back on it immediately.
Hopefully, you (and myself) found some ideas here that we will keep up during this crazy time of year. I don’t know about you, but I would like to be able to fit into that NYE dress without two weeks of a starvation diet. Good luck and let me know if you have any helpful ways to stay fit during the holidays.
