Sustainable fashion is a term that you see more and more in regards to the fashion industry. What does it mean, and why should you care? Well, I’m about to give you all a high level run down.
Sustainable Fashion: What is it?
Sustainable Fashion is pretty much the opposite of Fast Fashion (check out my article here). This type of fashion is conscious of the environmental impact from creation to disposal. Here are some of the qualities of sustainable fashion:
- They’re not mass-produced pieces, so there are sold in smaller quantities.
- The fabric used to make each piece is conscious of the chemicals involved. These pieces are most often made of natural or recycled materials.
- There’s an overall concern for the water, energy, and products used.
Sustainable Fashion: Why should you care?
Most of us (including myself) shop at Fast Fashion retailers. Why? Because these pieces are trending, inexpensive, and easy to consume. However, many of these massive retailers are creating havoc on our environment. They mass produce items, which often involve cheaper fabric, chemicals, and water waste. Also, many of these garments end up in our landfills, creating even more waste.
How to create a sustainable wardrobe
Now, it’s not always easy to find cute sustainable clothes and shoes that are a) affordable or b) cute. However, there are several ways to keep a sustainable wardrobe without having to give up what you own.
- Limit your spending on Fast Fashion
- Shop your closet (check out my article here)
- Buy second hand or thrifted (learn more here)
Closing Statement
In my current state as of now, I would prefer not to buy a whole new wardrobe composed of sustainable pieces, only because I don’t feel that is a sustainable lifestyle. However, what I am doing is going on a fashion fast for a month, shopping my closet more, and learning to love thrift stores again.
