Baby, it’s cold outside which means give me a damn winter coat, so I don’t freeze. Seriously, although it doesn’t get too cold (at least during the day) in California, I still love a good winter coat.
There are a couple of different frames of mind around purchasing a winter jacket. You could shop based on duration (how many years you want the coat) or on trend (what’s trendy right now). In this post, I will not only share the difference in the two ways to shop, but I will also share some of my favorite winter coats within various price ranges.
The Trendy Coat
When shopping for a coat that is more on the trendy side, do not expect to wear this jacket for more than one to two years (max). By definition, trends are not meant to be something that lasts throughout the years. A trend comes, and it goes fairly quickly. The sooner you hop on a trending style, the longer you will have to wear it. When shopping for this type of garment, you don’t necessarily have to break the bank, especially because this jacket won’t get a high amount of wear. Once a trend peaks, most stores will have that style available.
So how do you know it’s a trendy coat? Well, these coats usually are in the hottest color or print of the season. For example, right now puffy metallic jackets are trendy. This style and color combination, most likely won’t be fashionable to wear in the next few years.
The Classic Coat
And then,
Some examples include the long camel wool jackets or a traditional black peacoat. And throw a good plaid or herringbone pattern into the mix as well.

Faux Fur
Surprisingly, I purchase both types of winter coats each season. I buy at least one trendy jacket (at a lower cost) and invest in a classic style (most likely one that I don’t already own). By doing this, I not only build up my wardrobe over several years with classic looks, but I can also splash a little bit of trend here and there.
I want to give a big shoutout to Ekeila for requesting a post about winter coats. Thanks for the post suggestion. If anyone has other blog post requests, feel free to leave a comment or send me an email.

I always get torn between classic and trendy! Trendy is so fun but I think in general my style is more classic.

I have the same struggle. For me, I’m never disappointed with the classic style.
